same same, but different
Sawasdee from Bangkok, Thailand!
Been living life in the fast lane the last three months; just when I thought I’d have a lot of down time to doze off and write copiously before leaving the US again.
No regrets, though. A lot happened in those few months… I had a great time reconnecting with my dear friends living in ATX, and explored the street scene in downtown Austin every chance I could get. Managed to squeeze in a visit to a friend in Michigan, too, and on my way out of the U.S. I spent 4 days in Washington DC, with friends old and new.
From DC I flew straight to Rome, Italy, for a 10 day vacation with Grandma, her friend, and Xiker. Then, after four way too short days and way too much sagardo in Basque Country, Xiker and I were bound for Thailand.
We have been here for 5 days already— we were supposed to hop on over to Angeles, Philippines yesterday, but our flight was overbooked—so now we’re excited to celebrate Songkran! It feels so good to be back on the road again…
Being back in S.E. Asia after 5 years has brought back a flood of memories, and I can’t help feeling nostalgic every time I recognize something… Same same but different.
It was my first backpacking trip, and also when I met Xiker for the first time (we actually met in Laos but we did spend time together in Bangkok as well).
My idea of “travel” and “backpacking” was completely different than it is now—I was more obsessed with getting drunk and getting stamps in my passport than anything else. But, though I feel I kinda missed the point of traveling, I wouldn’t trade that trip and those memories for anything. It was a great first trip, and I still would recommend most first-timers to start with S.E. Asia. It’s easy, fun and most importantly— the comforts of the Western world are ubiquitous enough for the noob.
Would love love to do the S.E.A backpacking circuit again, but there are just too many places in the world I want to see, and we have been really looking forward to traveling the Philippine archipelago! However, we will be spending more time in Thailand towards the end of July, when Xiker’s parents and aunt will also be here.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi— we’re back!
